Reading Escapes

June sees the Henry Bloom Noble Library continue its support of Island of Culture 2014 with various events covering the theme ‘Reading Escapes’.

Reading Escapes

The ground floor will have a display about how to survive on a desert island and we’ll be asking people to tell us their top 3 desert island reads. The first floor will have displays of travel guides and the display on the second floor will cover different ways to escape on the Isle of Man, from way back to Cunningham’s Camp to the Yurts at Union Mills.

We will be hosting an evening event on Wednesday 25th June at 7.30pm called Trekking and Climbing in Nepal where Mike Quayle will be showing us slides of this travels in Nepal and talking about the school building charity, Pahar Trust Nepal, which has helped build 50 schools. Tickets are free and can be collected from the ground floor counter.

There will also be a children’s competition to design your perfect desert island. Children are being asked to draw a picture on an A4 page of their perfect desert island and their one luxury item. Please make sure the name, age and contact number is written on the back and that entries are handed in to the library before 28th June. The prizes are two giant teddy bears which will be on display in the children’s section throughout June.

We will also be holding the first ever adult reading challenge! The Smile Challenge is to encourage adults to make 4 visits to the library during June. On each visit (only one per day) you will receive a smiley sticker on your loyalty card and once you have completed the card it can be placed into an entry box which could see you win a Kobo Touch eReader!
