In his welcome address his Worship said Douglas Borough Council was very pleased to benefit from Scottish Widows’ involvement with the Summer Reading Challenge for the fourth consecutive year culminating in a prize presentation in September hailed by the young audience as ‘brilliant.’ He also thanked the company for their support of Douglas in Bloom by providing cash prizes of £100 for the winners of the Secret Garden and Private House with Garden categories which this year were awarded to Mr and Mrs John Masser and Mr Phil Walton respectively. He added that he was ‘extremely appreciative’ of all the hard work entrants devoted to the competition and was heartened to learn that both Mr and Mrs Masser and Mr Walton were already well advanced with their planting for next spring.

Scottish Widows senior manager Juan Clarke said: ‘Colleagues at Scottish Widows thoroughly enjoy their involvement with Douglas Borough Council. It’s not just about providing money, but more importantly, it’s about volunteering and we are delighted to be associated with the Henry Bloom Noble Library and Douglas in Bloom.’

Separately Scottish Widows presented Cronk-y-Berry School with a £100 book token in recognition of the school with the greatest number of children completing this year's Summer Reading Challenge.
